PARACETAMOL - It is considered a safe anti-fever medicine for children. – Adequate dose is 10-15 mg/kg bodyweight – The dose can be repeated only after 4–6 hours.

– DO NOT use DISPRIN or NIMESULIDE for fever or pain relief in children. - Sometimes, clinicians prefer a combination of paracetamol and ibuprofen to bring down fever and pain in a child.

If paracetamol is seeming to be unable to bring the fever down, every parent must know the following things — 1) CHECK THE THERMOMETER first (if it is working well or not)

2) Giving paracetamol  may bring the fever down to 100 to 102°F maybe, but might not make the child afebrile…..so a parent should NOT PANIC. This decrease in temperature is also considered a SUCCESS.

3) DO NOT PANIC if the temperature has NOT substantially gone down even after 1-2 hours of Paracetamol. Meanwhile, do TEPID WATER (neither hot nor cold to the touch) SPONGING.

4) “CHECKING THE CHILD’S TEMPERATURE AT FREQUENT INTERVALS” should not be done. This achieves nothing except STRESS TO THE PATIENTS.

5) The optimum frequency of measuring the temperature : Every 1-2 hours for temperature ≥ 103°F, Every 3-4 hourly for 100°F to 102°F, and Every 4-6 hourly for temperature ≤ 100°F.
